Lublin Metropolitan Railway Station: where function meets aesthetics

Lublin Metropolitan Station is the modern heart of the Lublin agglomeration, combining various modes of public transport in one place. Its construction began in 2021 and has spurred numerous investments in the area, including the revitalisation of the area next to the railway station, road upgrades and the construction of a new bridge. After two years of intensive work, Lublin has gained a new, functional and environmentally friendly railway station, which is already regarded as one of the most beautiful architectural achievements in Poland.

Efficient rainwater solution for the railway station in Lublin

An important element of the Lublin Metropolitan Railway Station project was the appropriate management of rainwater. The Investor expected proven and comprehensive solutions which would effectively drain rainwater from the granite slabs designed in front of the station. After hydraulic calculations were carried out by the HAURATON technical department, the RECYFIX HICAP F slotted retention and drainage system with a narrow 6mm gap was proposed. In addition to draining rainwater, this system also has the function of collecting it during heavy rainfall.

FASERFIX and RECYFIX improve the infrastructure of the station

The FASERFIX HICAP F drainage was extended with an additional RECYFIX PRO channel, which effectively complemented the rain collection system. At the entrance to the Central Railway Station, meanwhile, the robust FASERFIX KS drains were used, designed for high-traffic areas. Thanks to their high weather and chemical resistance, they ensure the reliability and durability of the infrastructure.

The subtlety of drainage

The RECYFIX HICAP F drainage system blends in perfectly with the modern architecture

The drainage systems used in the design of the Metropolitan Railway Station in Lublin blend in perfectly with the modern architecture and fit harmoniously into the public space. Despite the numerous routes crossing paved areas, the drainage systems have been routed in a discreet and subtle manner, without disturbing the aesthetics of the surroundings. Their functionality goes hand in hand with elegance, allowing them to remain consistent with the overall architectural design while emphasising the modern character of this impressive building.

Daniel Steć HAURATON

In carrying out this project, we were able to use our knowledge and experience to support the team with innovative solutions while meeting the requirements of such a prestigious investment. The Metropolitan Railway Station in Lublin is not only a modern transport centre, but also a symbol of care for the environment.

Green roof at the Metropolitan Railway Station

The Metropolitan Railway Station in Lublin has been fitted with a green roof, which is not only aesthetically stunning, but also plays an important role in mitigating the effect of urban heat islands. The green roof’s irrigation system is based on recycled rainwater. In addition, the facility is energy self-sufficient, thanks to the use of heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. This is complemented by anti-smog panels that reduce pollution levels in the station’s immediate surroundings, creating a healthier environment in the immediate vicinity of the facility.

Awards obtained by the facility

Lublin Metropolitan Station has won numerous awards, confirming its unique character. In 2019, the project was recognised in the World Building of the Year competition, followed a year later by the Real Estate Impactor in the ‘Innovative Approach to Space Design’ category. In 2022, the building received the prestigious Green Building Awards in the ‘Best Environmental Design’ category, proving that modern architecture can be both functional and environmentally friendly. In addition, the Metropolitan Railway Station won the Property Design Awards 2024 in the ‘solid – public buildings’ category and was honoured with the ‘Accessibility Leader 2024’ award in the large public building category.
