Surface water treatment

Surface water created by heavy rainfall, melting snow or ice can contain pollutants. Roads, car parks and other surfaces are continually exposed to a variety of pollutants including heavy metals (zinc, lead, copper), microplastics, hydrocarbons, oils and sediment.

Surface run-off can wash these pollutants into natural watercourses and sewer networks, which imposes harm to the environment and our fragile ecosystem.

How can surface water be treated

To prevent pollutants or harmful substances from entering watercourses, oceans or sewerage, surface water run-off must be treated at the source before it reaches other outlets.

A surface water treatment solution such as a drainage and filtration system can manage surface water, whilst capturing pollutants and improving the overall water quality.

Surface water passes through a filter substrate, which is designed to capture pollutants, allowing purified water to be discharged. The substrate addresses specific pollutants that are present within the particular environment. This can range from heavy metals and oils on industrial yards to rubber granulate on artificial turf.

Characteristics of surface water treatment systems

Loads and forces

As drainage and filtration systems are beneficial for industrial environments, the system must be capable of withstanding traffic loads and patterns in line with the proposed use. This can include anything from extreme heavy loads, high speeds, slow moving traffic, dynamic and lateral forces and transverse movements, etc.

Traffic frequency

As numerous vehicles traffic surface water treatment systems, they must have the capability to cope with continual traffic with varied wheel types and configurations.

Environmental influences

Provide efficient rainwater treatment in environments with local variables such as low and high temperatures, saline conditions, frost and road gritting / de-icing salts

Time and cost-efficient

Installation should be simple and maintenance should to be kept to a minimum, but when required no special tools or machinery are needed.

Continual performance

Efficiently treat surface water run-off even during heavy rainfall.

Compliant to standards

The channel system must comply with environmental regulations and be certified to EN1433:2002

Filter substrate channels for rainwater treatment

DRAINFIX CLEAN - rainwater filtration leaving surface water clear
Before and after treatment with the Filter substrate CARBOTEC 100

The DRAINFIX CLEAN system with a CARBOTEC filter substrate has been specially developed to meet the requirements of rainwater treatment for traffic areas – with outstanding results:

  • Total suspended solids (TSS) 99.5%

  • Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) 99.9 %

  • Zn (Zinc) 99.8%

  • Cu (Copper) 99.8%

In order to effectively retain microplastics and microrubber caused by tire abrasion and other pollutants, the CARBOTEC substrate was developed with a specially designed filter resistor. This ensures that the cleaning performance works even with uneven flow, large connection surfaces and heavy rain. With the CARBOTEC filter substrate, the finest particles are retained right from the start of filtration.

  • High carbonate content (carbonate reserves for many decades)

  • Precipitation/binding of dissolved heavy metals

  • Optimal filter resistance of < 7 x 10-4 M/s
